According to AT&T, you’ll be able to buy the new iPhone for $199 for the 8GB version or $299 for the 16GB version only if you’re eligible for the discount and you have to sign contract with AT&T for using their services within a period of time.
If you’re not eligible for the discount, you still have to sign the contract but the price of iPhone 3G will be $399 for the 8GB version or $499 for the 16GB version.
And most suprisingly, there will be a no-contract iphone 3G coming soon to the market which will be selling at the price of $599 for the 8GB version and or $699 for the 16GB version.
My 2-cents about the pricing
“There is no free lunch in this world.” I love this proverb as it means the same what apple and AT&T did to us. You are exited when Apple telling you that iPhone 3G will be at the price of $199, aren’t you? So now you knew the conditions of it.
For us, Malaysians, we still have to wait for the launch of iPhone 3G to our contry. Even if it’s launched, it would still considered expensive for us, I believe not many of us can manage to afford it. Without contract signing, iPhone will cost $599-$699 as shown above. Hey! 400 bucks different with the one Apple told us earlier of June!
I really hope that Apple will do the same with Maxis or Celcom as it did to AT&T, so that we can have a better price to purchase iphone 3G. We’re using Maxis or Celcom too right? We are paying them as well right? It’s worth to pay them continuously if they offer cheaper iPhone 3G.
But still there are many people selling iPhone in Malaysia. I’m not sure whether it’s legal or not, but the thing is that people can still buying iPhone in Malaysia. There is an unlocking system which unlock iPhone so that users are able to put their own sim card to the iPhone. But the warranty given by Apple would be definitely voided. However, there is still no unlocking system that is applicable to the new iPhone 3G yet. Perhaps it will be invented someday in the future… who know?
