Windows 10 has been around for over 3 years now. Most of personal and business computers have already been upgraded to it from Windows 7 or 8. Upgrading from old version of Windows to Windows 10 was still free until recently Microsoft has decided to put this offer down.

From now on, to legally own a Windows 10 license, no matter if you upgrade from an earlier version of Windows, you will have to purchase the license for about $199 for Windows 10 Pro, or $119 for Windows 10 Home (the official price when this post was written).

However, you can actually install or upgrade to Windows 10 first and pay for the license later on in the Windows 10 itself.

To download and install Windows 10 Digital copy for free from Microsoft, here’s how to do it.

First, go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10. Click on the Download tool now to download the media creation tool.

Run the Media creation tool on a working Windows computer. This tool will allow you to create a bootable Windows 10 installation on a USB drive or a DVD disk. The creation process will download several GB of Windows 10 installation files. Make sure your internet connection is fast enough for it to do so.

When you have the Windows 10 digital download bootable USB ready with you, insert it to the computer which you want to fresh install a new copy of Windows 10.

Set your BIOS to boot the USB first. When booted, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the Windows 10 installation.

When you are signed into Windows 10, you can then go to Settings > Update & Security > Activation, and click on the Go to Store button to purchase the Windows 10 license.

Doing this will certainly save you the time from having to purchase the boxed copy of Windows 10 installation especially if you want to install it on multiple new computers.

If you already have a product key or you purchased the product key elsewhere, you can also use the method above to install Windows 10 first, then go to the Activation settings and click on the Change product key button to enter your product key you’ve bought earlier.
